A clamp is one of the most basic tools in any workshop. Because everywhere something needs to be gripped, pulled down, held. For example, you can use the clamp to attach a beam, a board or other material to a construction goat or a workbench.

Clamps can be divided into several categories.
By shape, by the clamp itself and then by the way the clamp is operated.
The most widespread are the clamps of the shape resembling the letter "F" which are mostly used in assembly and joinery work and are also used by most DIYers.
These clamps have one fixed and one sliding arm. They are produced in many control versions: single-hand stepper mechanism, ratchet gears, helical gears with trapezoidal thread including combination with step feed and many others.
Clamps usually used in locksmiths' workshops have a "C" shaped frame. This shape allows for a large unloading. High clamping forces can also be achieved with this design.
This does not mean that "F" shaped joinery clamps are left behind. Manufacturers such as Piher or Bessey also achieve remarkable performance in this segment.

Probably the most represented category of clamps is from the cheapest Chinese products to top products of renowned brands e.g.: Bessey, Piher, Irwin etc. They are made of plastics, hardened plastics, steel, steel alloy, aluminium and not forgetting the classics made of wood.
Another separate chapter is the clamps for grout and other large products. Mechanical or hydraulic presses are used in industrial plants. In smaller workshops you will most often find classic rail clamps (knecht), body clamps or recently popular tube clamps which are suitable for use in home workshops and smaller operations.
The advantage of tubular clamps is their low weight, their storage capacity and last but not least their affordable price. The size of the product is limited only by the length of the pipe you use it on.
Locksmith clamps.
Here we get into more special products. Here, clamps in combination of a steel rod and a tempered cast iron jaw with a trapezoidal bolt are used a lot. Firstly, because of the required higher clamping force and also higher strength. (If you hit the cast iron with the electrode, nothing much happens).
Another special group are clamps and clamps for special welding tables with holes.
Another division of clamps is according to dimensions.
The length of the clamp is always given as the net clamping rate. The second dimension is the length of the arm or unloading.
Or how far from the edge the clamp can be used. The larger the shoulder alignment, the stronger and more robust the clamp design must be.
