Japanese planers

Japanese planers, known as Kanna, are hand planes for precision shaping and smoothing of wood. Unlike European planers, they have a lower blade angle - so you can cut wood fibres more cleanly, efficiently and with less effort.

Traditionally, Japanese planers are used by pulling towards you, which gives you better control over the planer. One hand pushes the planer against the surface and the other hand pulls it against the body.

Choose from a variety of Japanese planers - smoothing planes for finishing or skimmers for quick woodworking. See also Japanese saws and Japanese rasps made in Japan.

Because of their beauty and efficiency, which comes from their incredibly simple design, Japanese planers are also very popular in Europe. This puts a tool in the hands of the craftsman that is incredibly functional and simple. They consist of a blade, a wooden body and a chip breaker.

One of the key features of Japanese wood planes is the blade, which is made of high-quality steel and is typically very sharp. The blade is set at a low angle, allowing it to cut wood fibers more cleanly and efficiently than a standard Western-style planer.

Another unique aspect of Japanese wood planers is the wooden body, which is usually made of a dense and stable hardwood such as Japanese white or red oak. The body is designed to be comfortable to hold and easy to manoeuvre, and is often decorated with intricate patterns.

Setting the handcuff on these types of planer is very simple. Tap the top edge of the handcuff to increase the chip size of the material being removed or tap the back of the planer body to reduce it.

All in all, Japanese wood planers are highly regarded by woodworkers around the world for their precision, ease of use and beautiful craftsmanship. They are an important part of Japanese woodworking culture.
