Stud finders work by measuring density. Your wall panel has a single density; when the stud finder detects a higher density as you move the tool across the wall, it likely means you’ve reached the edge of a stud. To find the center of a stud, you must first locate both edges

Dual-Scan and Marking MethodTo ensure you find the center of the stud, scan the wall in both directions and mark each edge. The center of the stud will be midway between your two marks.

Target ^Control® ( ^TC™) technology ^{, available on SuperScan’s advanced wall scanners ®}, is fine-tuned to locate wooden studs while filtering out metal false positives, such as plumbing, pipes, straps, brackets, or conduits beneath the surface. With TC™ mode, users can employ the “Trust, but Verify” technique to identify “drill-safe” zones between adjacent drywall screws, nails, and backing boards.

FIND WOODEN OR METAL STUDS

Most residential buildings use wooden studs, while metal studs are used for interior walls in most commercial buildings. ^Zircon®edge finders and center finders can locate studs regardless of what they’re made of. All ^{Zircon®StudSensor™}tools can detect both wooden and metal studs.

DEEPSCAN® – SCANNING THICK WALLS FOR STUD LOCATION

Due to additional layers of wallboard or paneling, studs may be too deep to be found with standard scanning. Zircon tools with ^{the DeepScan®} feature can be switched to a higher sensitivity setting to detect studs and joists up to 1 1/2 inches deep. This extra power should not be used unless necessary, as it is oversensitive on normal walls and results in too many false alarms.
